SIMONDS CONTINUES STRONG MOMENTUM, OUT-RAISING OPPONENT
Democrat Shelly Simonds raises $102,464 from 1084 contributions in latest finance report
NEWPORT NEWS – In the latest fundraising period for the 2019 election, Shelly Simonds once again out-raised Republican incumbent, David Yancey, by $29,421 to bring her fundraising total to $102,464 for the reporting period. Simonds was one of only two Democratic challengers to bring in over $100,000 for this report and was the top grossing Democratic challenger in the Commonwealth outside of Northern Virginia.
Simonds continues to build unprecedented grassroots momentum reporting 1,084 contributions with 86% of contributions being $100 or less. Her opponent, who was most recently re-elected by a random tie-breaking drawing in 2017, reported only 50 contributions.
“People in Newport News and around Virginia have shown once again that they are ready for change. We remember the recount and feel what happened was wrong,” Simonds said. “We need a new ending to this story – one where we can make progress in Virginia. We are just one seat away from real change and Democrats having power in the House. Put simply, David Yancey is standing in our way. We need leaders who will put us over their big, corporate donors to lower drug prices, prioritize public education, and protect clean air and water. His presence in the General Assembly has allowed Republicans to block innovation in Virginia.”
